Riding on the back of an all-round performance with both bat and ball, Haryana beat Rajasthan in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023-24 Final to clinch their maiden title in history.

Tewatia, Sumit's late fireworks powered Haryana to a formidable total

Earlier, Haryana elected to bat first after winning the toss and posted a competitive total of 287 for the loss of eight wickets inside the first 50 overs. Ankit Kumar was the top-scorer, opening the innings with a fantastic 88 off 91.

Rajasthan got a couple of early wickets in the powerplay but Ankit, alongside skipper Ashok Menaria steadied the ship and went on to add 124 runs for the third wicket. Just when Haryana seemed to be eyeing a big score, Rajasthan regained control with a couple of quick breaks in the middle.

However, Nishant Sindhu, Rahul Tewatia and Sumit Kumar came really good at the end with late fireworks and propelled Haryana’s total to a defendable total. In bowling perspective, Aniket Choudhury was at his absolute best and finished with a figure of 4-49. Rahul Chahar got only one wicket but was economical throughout his spell.

Sumit, Harshal stifles Rajasthan's chase

Chasing 288, Rajasthan got off to a very poor start as they lost three wickets, including Deepak Hooda and Mahipal Lomror with only 12 on the board early in the powerplay. Sumit Kumar did the major damage, getting all the first three wickets with Anshul Kamboj keeping it tight at the other end.

Abhijeet Tomar, who opened the innings, had a tough start but managed to survive Haryana's new ball brilliance. Tomar was joined by Karan Lamba at 5 and the duo started the reconstruction job. Just when things were getting better for Rajasthan, Tewatia got the breakthrough, dismissing Lamba to get Haryana back in control.

Tomar at the other end found his form back and went on to complete his half century. Kunal Singh Rathore, at 6, started positively as both Tomar and Rathore started to open their arms and put the pressure back on Haryana.

Rajasthan regained momentum as both Tomar and Rathore were striking the ball well. The former completed his third List A century before Harshal Patel came back to the attack to bowl a match turning spell. Harshal removed both the set batters Tomar and Rathore which paved the way for Haryana to their maiden title.

Sumit Kumar and Harshal Patel were the pick of the bowlers for Haryana in the final. Kamboj came back in the end to get two well deserving wickets and Haryana got over the line, restricting Rajasthan 30 runs short of the target.
