The ongoing Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has delivered yet another thrilling contest, with the match hanging on a knife-edge.  After a dominant first innings performance by Australia they posted a formidable total of 474 runs.

Despite a fighting knock by Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s top-order collapsed under pressure, losing quick wickets. However, Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy countered with a gritty partnership of 127 runs for the eighth wicket, which gave India hope.

With Jasprit Bumrah making history on Day 4 by becoming the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets, India remains in the hunt, however Australia’s lead has now exceeded the 300-run mark.

As India faces an increasingly difficult task of chasing down this target, in this article, let's take a look at what history suggests about the prospects of fourth-innings successful run-chase.

Highest Fourth Innings Chases For India

When it comes to India’s highest successful fourth-innings chase, the record stands at 406 runs against the West Indies in 1976.
