What Is Obstructing The Field In Cricket? Everything You Need To Know

Ravindra Jadeja Run Out Obstructing the Field in CSK vs RR Match (X)Ravindra Jadeja Run Out Obstructing the Field in CSK vs RR Match (X)

"Obstructing the field" is one of the rarest ways for a batter to get out in cricket, and it is one of many ways a batter can be dismissed. In today's match against Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings batter Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed in this unusual manner.

But this wasn't the first time Ravindra Jadeja found himself obstructing the field this season.

In the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad, where SRH emerged victorious, CSK's Jadeja obstructed the field in a similar manner. However, SRH captain Pat Cummins chose to take back the appeal for the wicket, so Jadeja continued batting.

A similar incident occurred back in 2006 when Suresh Raina's throw was blocked by Inzamam ul Haq, resulting in Inzamam being given out. Rahul Dravid was Indian captain back then.

What is Obstructing the field dismissal?

According to MCC laws of cricket, obstructing the field is a form of dismissal in cricket, where a batter intentionally obstructs the bowling side from taking a catch, fielding, throwing, or hitting the stumps.

As per law, a batsman is considered out obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances mentioned in section 37.2, while receiving a ball from the bowler, they intentionally strike the ball with a hand not holding the bat.

This rule applies whether it's the first strike or subsequent strikes. "Receiving the ball" includes both attempting to play the ball and striking the ball more than once in defense of their wicket.

Furthermore, according to the rules, the bowler does not receive credit for this dismissal. Therefore, neither Avesh, who bowled the delivery, nor Samson, who threw the ball resulting in Jadeja's dismissal today, was credited with the wicket.
