In a heartbreak for the visitors, Australia defeated India by 184 in the Boxing Day Test and crushed their dreams to win the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Nevertheless, a good performance by the hosts secured Australian captain, Pat Cummins the Player of the Match award in the India versus Australia fourth Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne. 

Cummins was named Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance in the Test. With the ball, he claimed 3/89 in the first innings and followed it up with 3/28 in the second, playing a key role in Australia’s victory. Cummins also contributed with the bat, scoring 49 runs off 63 balls in the first innings and a vital 41 runs off 90 balls in the second innings.

His match-defining efforts helped Australia seize control, leading them to a crucial win and showcasing his leadership and skill on both fronts. Pat Cummins was awarded with the Johnny Mullagh Medal, for the second time, because of his brilliant performance. 

What is the Johnny Mullagh Medal?

Since 2020, the Player of the Match in the Boxing Day Test has been awarded the Johnny Mullagh Medal, named in honour of Indigenous Australian cricketer Johnny Mullagh. Mullagh, a key member of the 1868 Aboriginal cricket team, is celebrated for his exceptional contributions to the sport, both as a player and a trailblazer.

The medal recognises outstanding individual performances in the iconic Boxing Day Test. Pat Cummins received this prestigious award for his brilliant all-round performance in the match, further cementing its importance.

Previously, the award has been won by only four players i.e. Ajinkay Rahane (2020), Scott Boland (2021), David Warner (2022) and Pat Cummins (2023 and 2024)
