'We seem to find a way to win and win ugly' - Beth Mooney lauds Australia’s mentality

Australia’s opening batter Beth Mooney is all geared up for the gold-medal clash against India Women in the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday. The Women in Yellow were absolutely terrific in their semi-final clash against New Zealand.

The five-wicket victory at the Edgbaston didn’t come easy for Australia as they had almost lost the plot due to a batting collapse. However, Mooney and Tahlia McGrath rose to the occasion to take their team closer to the gold medal.

Mooney believes that Australia are now used to the concept of “winning ugly”. The team is happy with different players stepping up and taking up the responsibility.

Mooney describes the dressing room environment

Playing against India, Australia will have their eyes set on winning the Cricket tournament at CWG, having already won the T20 and ODI World Cups in recent years.

"The belief in the dressing room is probably at an unprecedented level, to be honest, just because we seem to find a way to win and win ugly. It's not always pretty.

“Perhaps in the past - probably five or six years ago - we were looking for that perfect game and trying to make it look as good as it could. We've sort of got an understanding now that it can look a bit ugly at times. Tonight wasn't the ugliest we've played,” Mooney said as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The opening batter was not happy with her performance in the semi-final

Mooney seemed disappointed with her performance in the semi-final. The batter played a knock of 36 runs off 29 balls to stabilize Australia after they lost two wickets within five overs.

However, the opener was hoping for an unbeaten partnership with Rachael Haynes to ensure an easy victory. In the end, Ashleigh Gardner and Grace Harris played cameos of 19* and 8* runs to take Australia home by five wickets.

"From my point of view, I was pretty disappointed to get out at the time I did just because the game was sort of in our hands a bit. I thought Rachael and I could get us home and hosed from that position, so that was disappointing, and probably something for me to reflect on.

"But I think at the same time, Ash and Grace showed their maturity again and got us over the line. We can't discount New Zealand. They're a great side and really put us onto the pump tonight, as they have done over the last few years," Mooney concluded.
