Team India's start to the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia turned into a nightmare after they chose to bowl first upon winning the toss at The Oval on Wednesday, June 7. Steve Smith and Travis Head took full advantage of the opportunity on a relatively easier surface, tormenting the Indian bowlers throughout the first day with an unbeaten partnership of over 250 runs for the fourth wicket.

Although India took three early wickets when the pitch offered some assistance to the seamers, their fortunes quickly turned as the Aussie duo settled in. The Indian bowlers struggled to find their rhythm and appeared clueless against the Australian batting onslaught.

It was a time when Indian fans deeply felt the absence of their ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who had the knack for picking wickets even on seemingly unresponsive pitches.

A fan even went on to share a video of Bumrah’s breathtaking spell at the Oval during the fourth Test of the 2021 England series.

Bumrah's spell single-handedly altered the course of the match in India's favour, all while the surface offered no assistance and the game seemed to be slipping away for England.

Looking at the wickets column alone wouldn't do justice to the masterclass Bumrah delivered in that match. His controlled bowling was instrumental in unsettling the likes of Haseeb Hameed, Rory Burns, and Joe Root.

While containing runs, Bumrah effectively pushed the batters on the back foot, creating opportunities for the likes of Umesh Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur to capitalise on and pick wickets.

As far as the ongoing WTC final is concerned, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Shardul Thakur each took one wicket, reducing Australia to 76 for the loss of three wickets in 25 overs.

However, Steve Smith and Travis Head put the pressure back on India, forging a partnership of 251 runs for the fourth wicket as Australia ended the first day with a total of 328 runs on the scoreboard by stumps.
