Shubman Gill's meteoric rise in Indian cricket has been nothing short of sensational. His magnificent run-scoring spree in international cricket and the IPL 2023 has established him as one of the brightest talents in the game, with many seeing him as the successor of Virat Kohli.

In the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval, starting on June 7, Shubman Gill has been entrusted with the role of India's opening batter, standing alongside captain Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.

In an exclusive interview with ICC, Gill opened up on his preparations for the WTC final. Crediting his Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) exploits for boosting his confidence, he also acknowledged that a Test cricket presents a completely different challenge, requiring a fresh mindset and adaptability.

Here’s what Shubman Gill told ICC:

"It does give you a bit of confidence (from the IPL), but I feel this is a completely different scenario and a completely different game."

"But that's the fun about it. Last week we were playing something completely different with a different atmosphere and that is the challenge and that is what is exciting about Test cricket."

Reflecting on the team's WTC Final against New Zealand, Shubman Gill, said that as a batting group, India had learned their lessons from that game and would look to improve their game play this time around.

"We have been talking about some of the things we have learnt as a team and especially as a batting group from playing that match. Hopefully we will be able to overcome the mistakes we made last time."

Prior to the IPL, Gill had scored a Test century against Australia in the fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Ahmedabad. He will aim to continue from where he left off and contribute towards India's quest to lift the WTC mace.
