The International Cricket Council (ICC) paid a fitting tribute to master Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah before the ace quickly hit the ground running at the 2023 World Cup in home conditions.

The governing body celebrated the modern-day giant, who is arguably the finest bowler in the world across formats, with a clip recalling his stump-shattering moments from the 2019 edition of the competition.

Bumrah had an excellent tournament in England four years back, emerging as one of the stand-out pacers despite the flat nature of the conditions on offer. The Indian spearhead took a whopping 18 wickets in just nine outings at the 2019 World Cup, bagging his scalps at 20.61 apiece while conceding only 4.41 runs an over.

The unorthodox right-arm seamer dominated opposition batting line-ups under immense pressure and made sure India held the upper hand in crucial moments in their successful build-up towards the knock-outs stage.

Bumrah's WC importance

Bumrah was one of the highest impact bowlers of the competition where India topped the league table but their dream of the biggest triumph and their third World Cup trophy was put to rest by New Zealand in a painstaking semifinal defeat.

Before the loss to the Kiwis, however, Bumrah destroyed the stumps on a frequent basis during the marquee tournament, with his death-overs performances against Bangladesh, Australia, Afghanistan, England and New Zealand especially standing out. He was simply unplayable at times with his great mix of yorkers and slow off-cutters, which the batters could never come up with an answer to.

In a clip shared over Instagram, the ICC recalled how Bumrah executed the yorker with pinpoint accuracy at the base of the stumps in the close-fought fixture against Bangladesh and outsmarted Australian wicketkeeper-batter with a great off-cutter. The great bowler did the same to the explosive Glenn Maxwell at the 2016 T20 World Cup in Mohali.

Bumrah will be determined to replicate his 2019 campaign in the coming World Cup in front of billion Indian fans and perhaps go one step further to make it his career-defining run with the ball this winter. India will also greatly depend on the leader of their pace pack to provide them an edge over opposition line-ups and come out unscathed in the decisive end-overs phase.
