Welsh Fire secured their second win in The Hundred 2023 Men’s tournament with a comfortable six-wicket victory over Birmingham Phoenix in what was a game that was filled with nail-biting moments.

Moeen Ali denied! Van der Merwe's catch got everyone talking

The talking point of the match was undoubtedly Roelof van der Merwe's astonishing rebound catch. When Moeen Ali lofted one skyward, it seemed destined to be another drop as the ball slipped through van der Merwe’s fingers.

However, to the all-rounder’s luck, the ball ricocheted off his chest. With sharp reflexes, he managed to grasp it one-handed on the rebound and left the audience both stunned and elated.

While this spectacular catch garnered attention, van der Merwe's overall performance was commendable. The veteran left-arm spinner made his mark with the ball, claiming crucial wickets of Birmingham Phoenix openers, Will Smeed for 10 and Ben Duckett who managed 25. His bowling figures were an impressive 2/16 from 15 balls.

Opting to bat first, Birmingham Phoenix’s innings didn't quite take off as they would’ve hoped, scoring a modest 112/7. Welsh Fire’s bowling waa on point, with Haris Rauf and David Payne delivering impressive figures of 2/20 and 2/11, respectively. Notably, Shaheen Afridi, with figures of 1/26, sent his national teammate, Shadab Khan, back to the dugout for just 2 runs.

In contrast, the chase by Welsh Fire was a different story altogether. Opener Stephen Eskinazi steered the ship with a blistering 43 runs off just 18 balls, which included six boundaries and a couple of maximums. Captain Tom Abell played a measured knock, with an unbeaten 23 off 18 deliveries, ensuring Welsh Fire cruised past the finish line with 15 balls to spare.

This victory has propelled Welsh Fire up to the third spot in the points table and has given them momentum as they progress in the competition.

On the other hand, a winless Birmingham Phoenix would be introspecting on their strategies and performance as they sit at the bottom with two defeats and two no results.
