Injury-prone Jofra Archer, who had his last competitive outing in India during the IPL 2023 season, might well return to the cricket-crazy nation as England’s travelling reserve for the 2023 World Cup next month.

Earlier, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had excluded Archer from team’s 15-player squad for the tournament, considering the speedster was still recovering from the elbow stress fracture he sustained for IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.

However, in latest development, the 28-year-old was seen bowling at the nets alongside other English players at The Oval ahead of the third ODI of their home series against New Zealand.

ECB selector teases of a possible Archer comeback

The England team, under Jos Buttler, are currently hosting New Zealand in a four-match ODI series as part of their World Cup 2023 dress rehearsals. Jofra Archer was rightfully excluded from the English side owing to his injury.

In a recent turn of events, the speedster was seen accompanying his teammates at The Oval, at a time when Buttler and co. were bracing themselves for the all-important third ODI against New Zealand at the same venue.

England men’s team selector Luke Wright earlier hinted out a possibility of Archer making it to their World Cup 2023 side as a travelling reserve. The selection committee announced their 15-member squad for England’s title-defence last month, with team’s pace battery set to be composed by Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and others. Here is a look at England’s entire World Cup 2023 squad:

Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes.

Defending champions England, under Jos Buttler this time, will commence their World Cup 2023 campaign with a match against familiar foes and 2019 finalists New Zealand on October 5. The much-awaited contest is set to be played at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
