We have witnessed Trent Boult’s magic with the new ball early in the powerplay time and time and again. Be it in the IPL or while playing for New Zealand, Boult with the new ball in the powerplay is a different beast altogether.

Well, it was no different in the second ODI against England in Southampton today as Boult marked his ODI comeback into ODI cricket in his own style. New Zealand won the toss and asked England to bat first after early after rain in Southampton forced the game to 34 overs a side.

Boult, playing his 100th ODI game, gave New Zealand a flying start with the ball as he reduced England to 8 for 3 inside the very first five overs, dismissing Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Captain Jos Buttler launched a counterattack to turn the momentum of the game but fell to Mitchell Santner for a 25-ball 30.

With five wickets down and only 55 runs on the board, it looked like England would not even cross the 100-run mark. Then Liam Livingstone, at seven, played a magnificent innings to not only pull his team out of trouble but take them to a formidable total.

The hard hitting batter stitched two important partnerships in the middle with Moeen Ali and Sam Curran to take England past the 200-run mark. Livingstone remained unbeaten with his career-best 95 off 78 and England finished with 226 for 7 in 34 overs.

Chasing 227 in 34 overs, New Zealand lost Finn Allen early as David Willey struck in the very first over of the innings. Devon Conway at the other end had a difficult stay before departing for 24-bal 14. New Zealand were 51 for two at the end of 10 overs with Will Young and Daryl Mitchell in the middle.

Young, who managed to see off the new ball and was well set, had to depart after an unfortunate run-out. England were on the driving seat as Reece Topley came back to take 3 quick wickets inside seven balls to take the game away from the visitors.

Mitchell did continued his good form and scored another half century but lack of support from the other end caused New Zealand's surrender. Eventually, England bowled them out with 147 and won the game by 79 runs. David Willey, Reece Topley were the pick of the bowlers for England with 3 wickets each.
