Joe Root, who played the last of his 32 T20Is for England back in 2019, made a strong case for himself in the format with a scintillating 35-ball 72* against London Spirit in Men’s The Hundred 2023 season. The batting veteran dispatched 10 boundaries and two sixes in the process, and formed crucial partnerships with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Colin Munro and Daniel Sams.

Despite his run-riot at Lord’s, defending champions Trent Rockets fell a mere two runs short of their monumental run-chase task against Spirit in match number 16 of the competition.

Root demonstrates T20 calibre with The Hundred special

Playing only his second The Hundred game of the season, Joe Root unfurled the innings of the run-chase for his side against London Spirit at Lord’s. The elegant right-hander listed up 72 unbeaten runs off just 35 deliveries, while chasing a stiff 196-run target.

Trent Rockets, however, failed up to uphold Root’s masterclass as they fell two runs short against Spirit to register their second successive defeat this competition.

Ever since May 2019, Root has limited himself to playing only Tests and ODIs for England. Despite his deliberate exile from T20Is, the cricketer holds a formidable record for his country in the shortest format of the game.

In 32 matches, he has registered 893 runs at a healthy average of over 35, with five half-centuries to his name. In all T20s, the 32-year-old has so far minted 2,169 runs at an average of 32.86, with 14 fifties and at a strike-rate of 127.43.
