The ever-reliable Deepti Sharma was at her absolute best once again as she bowled the most economical spell against South Africa Women in the ongoing third ODI at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Sunday, 23 June. She bagged two wickets while conceding only 27 runs in her 10-over spell.

Both her wickets came in the same over on consecutive deliveries. It was the 43rd over of the South African innings, and Nadine de Klerk was going strong for the visitors, having scored 25 runs.

She was the set batter, and India needed her wicket. That’s when captain Harmanpreet Kaur turned to her most experienced bowler, and Deepti did not disappoint.

Deepti conceded singles off the first two balls before removing De Klerk with a sharp-turning off-spin delivery. It was a short delivery, directed at the stumps. De Klerk went for the pull but missed it, giving Deepti her first and India their seventh wicket.

Next, Nonkululeko Mlaba walked in. Deepti flighted the length delivery on the off-stump, drawing Mlaba into the shot as she left enough gap between bat and pad. The ball spun back in and crashed into the middle stump. It was a classical off-spinner’s delivery.

These were the last two wickets that fell in the first innings. After being cornered at 143-5, the visitors did well to post a fighting total of 215 in the allotted 50 overs.

The ninth-wicket partnership of 37 from 44 between Mieke de Ridder and Tumi Sekhukhune certainly lifted South Africa from a precarious position.

India have been batting extremely well, with Smriti Mandhana leading the way with two back-to-back hundreds in the last two games.

With the series already in the bag, the Indians will come hard at the South African bowlers to chase the total and seal the series 3-0.
