[Watch] Bizarre Scenes In WBBL As Stumps Stand Intact After Jonassen Gets Bowled

Shocking scenes unveiled during a Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) fixture played between Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat on Friday (November 24) as Heat batter Jess Jonassen survived a genuine bowled dismissal at the Adelaide Oval.

Jonassen escaped a clear bowled after the strong LED bails and stumps stayed intact even as the loopy off-spinner from Thunder's Chamari Athapaththu hammered the stumps ever so cleanly during the Brisbane run-chase.

As the left-hander shaped up to play a leg-side hoick, she was yorked completely by Athapaththu in a terrific delivery that deserved the breakthrough. However, Jonassen survived the plumb dismissal as the LED bails refused to move off their place even as the ball jammed halfway down the stumps.

LED Bails In Spotlight After Jonassen Survives Bowled Dismissal

Notably, the WBBL 2023-24 has also had the introduction of stumps glittered with LED lights at both ends of the pitch, which are significantly harder than the traditional sticks used for cricket matches and hence don't often respond to the ball hitting them in the normal fashion.

The way the delivery from Athapaththu crashed halfway down the middle and off-stump for the left-hand batter, a normal stump would've certainly witnessed the bails falling off the top of the stumps with the stick probably being uprooted from its position.

That wasn't the case with the LED stumps and bails as Jonassen couldn't believe her great fortunes in an amusing clip doing the rounds in cricket circles and raising debates on the usage of technology to upgrade the stumps.

Cricket experts continue to question the usage of hard LED bails, which often refuse to fall off the top of the stumps despite the optimum connection of the ball on them. Many previous instances have seen batters survive the run-outs and bowleds since the LED bails didn't shake and fall.
