Former legendary Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram is under the scanner for promoting an illegal online gambling app. A case has been filed against him for associating with and endorsing the platform, according to the report.
Case Filed Against Akram For Illegal Promotion Of App
One of the fiercest pacers of his time, Wasim Akram bid goodbye to cricket long ago, but remains an active part of the community with his commentary stints around the world.
However, a new report has emerged from Lahore where Akram has been under the scanner of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) for promotion of an illegal online betting app, named "Baji", as he has been associated with the company as their brand ambassador, according to a report in PTI.
"A poster circulating on social media and a video clip show Wasim Akram endorsing the online platform, which has sparked interest among general users in the App," the complaintant mentioned.
The complaint was filed by Muhammad Fiaz, who has taken legal action against the former cricketer for promoting the app through social media and video clips.
What Could Be Consequences For Akram?
The complainant has asked the NCCIA to take hard action against Akram, as this is a serious offence under the Electronic Crimes Act of 2016.
One of the NCCIA officials, while speaking to the PTI, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and if the allegations are proven true, there will be strict action against the legendary cricketer.
"We will take action against him if the allegations are found to be true," an NCCIA official said.
It is worth noting that promotion of any gambling app or betting platform is strictly prohibited, especially in Pakistan, where it is considered a grave crime. Previously, popular YouTuber Ducky Bhai, whose real name is Saad ur Rahman, also a famous TikToker, was arrested in connection with the promotion of the same app a few days ago, and it seems Akram could face the same route too.
