India’s new T20I vice-captain, Shubman Gill, has impressed one and all in Test cricket. Even in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill’s numbers are staggering, with some influential performances under his belt.
In the recent past, Gill, who has featured in a handful of T20 matches, is all set to make his comeback in the T20I side for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Therefore, let’s have a look at Shubman Gill’s best T20I knocks so far for India in the blue jersey.
5. 46 vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot, 2023
At the 5th position is Shubman Gill’s 46-run knock, which came off 36 deliveries against Sri Lanka back in the year 2023 in Rajkot. It was the third T20I of the series, where India batted first and scored a mammoth total of 228 runs on the back of Suryakumar Yadav’s 112*, where Gill was the second-highest scorer for the side with 46, with three maximums and two boundaries. In the end, Sri Lanka was bowled out for a paltry 137, as India won comfortably by 91 runs and sealed the series.
4. 58* vs Zimbabwe, Harare, 2024
Featuring in the fourth position on this list is Gill’s 58-run unbeaten knock against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2024. India were up against Zimbabwe in the fourth T20I of the five-match series, and in this game, the home side batted first and scored 152 for the loss of seven wickets. In reply, India chased the score down rather easily, as they won in just 15.2 overs without losing a single wicket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brilliant 93 not out of 61 deliveries, while his opening partner and skipper in this series for India, Gill, scored 58 not out of 39 deliveries with six boundaries and two maximums at a strike rate of 148.71. Gill beautifully partnered Jaiswal in this game, who was the main aggressor, as he took on the Zimbabwe bowlers right from the start, while Gill played a handy knock without giving many opportunities to the opposition bowlers.
3. 66 vs Zimbabwe, Harare, 2024
In the preceding game of the above-mentioned match, India were facing Zimbabwe in the third T20I at the same venue, Harare. India, in this encounter, batted first and scored 182 for the loss of four wickets, where Gill emerged the top-scorer with 66 off 49 deliveries with seven fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 134.69.
Gill’s valuable knock helped India put an above-par score on the board, as Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a fluent 44. In return, the home side faltered, as they could only manage 159, with Dion Myers scoring 65*, where Washington Sundar picked three wickets in his four overs as India won very easily by 23 runs.
2. 77 vs West Indies, Lauderhill, 2023
In the year 2023, India were up against West Indies at Lauderhill in Florida, in the fourth T20I of the series. In this game, the West Indian side batted first and scored 178, with Shimron Hetmyer scoring a breezy 61. India, chasing 179 for victory, did the job comfortably, as the opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were again ahead of their opponents. Jaiswal scored 84 off 51 balls and remained not out.
While Gill, who scored 77 off 47 deliveries, had three boundaries and five maximums to his name at a strike rate of 163.82 as India won with three overs and nine wickets to spare, where only Gill was dismissed. Again, Gill displayed his class with the bat, batting at the top of the order as he outclassed the West Indian bowlers with his timing and skill set.
1. 126* vs New Zealand, Ahmedabad, 2023
Finally, at the top of the list is Shubman Gill's marathon 126-run unbeaten knock against New Zealand in the year 2023. It was the third T20I, which was the decider of the series, where at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the home side India batted first and put up a mammoth total of 234 for the loss of four wickets.
Shubman Gill turned out to be the hero with 126 not out off 63 balls, with seven gigantic maximums and 12 boundaries at an unbelievable strike rate of exactly 200. Gill was very well supported by Rahul Tripathi in this game, who had 44 runs after his name off 22 deliveries, as India's score proved to be exceedingly out of New Zealand's grasp.
Chasing 235 for victory, New Zealand were folded for a measly 66, as Hardik Pandya claimed four wickets in his four overs, as India won by an unbelievably huge margin of 168 runs and sealed the T20I series 2-1 on the back of Gill's magnificent performance.
This 126 was a testament to the fact that there are many more such knocks waiting to come off the bat of Shubman Gill, who is yet to establish himself in the T20I side. We look forward to the new challenges coming his way with the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. With him now being the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav, it will now be more interesting to see how Gill takes responsibility to carry India to defendable totals with his dynamic vision and fluent batting abilities on display yet again.
