In a significant development, the Indian team has suffered another major injury setback during the ongoing three-match ODI series against New Zealand.  After wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was ruled out due to a side strain, all-rounder Washington Sundar is now likely to miss the remainder of the series following a side strain injury suffered in the first ODI at Baroda on Sunday, January 11.

Sundar picked up the injury while bowling in the first innings of the match. He managed to bowl only five overs before walking off the field due to visible discomfort.

Side strain forces Washington Sundar off field in Baroda ODI

At the time Washington Sundar left the field, it was unclear whether he would be able to bat during India's run chase. However, when India lost a flurry of wickets towards the end of the innings and the match became tense, the team had no option but to send Sundar out to bat.

Despite struggling physically, Sundar scored seven runs but was clearly uncomfortable, especially while running between the wickets. His movement was restricted, and it was evident that the injury was bothering him.

Eventually, KL Rahul held his nerve and finished the chase, helping India secure a hard-fought win and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

Washington Sundar likely out of NZ ODI series

According to a report by Revsportz journalist Subhayan Chakraborty, Washington is likely to be ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series.

“It looks like Washington Sundar could be out of the series,” the report stated.

Adding to the concern, India captain Shubman Gill confirmed at the post-match presentation that Sundar had suffered a side strain and would undergo scans.

"Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match," Gill said.

KL Rahul, after the match, said that he was not aware of the extent of the injury and felt that Sundar was striking the ball well.

"I didn’t know he couldn’t run. I knew he had some discomfort in the first innings but wasn’t aware of the extent,” Rahul said. “He was striking the ball really well," he said.

"When he came in, we were already scoring at about a run-a-ball, so there was no need to take risks. There wasn’t much pressure on him. He rotated the strike and did his job."

BCCI to confirm Sundar's replacement as concerns grow

It is important to note that the BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding Sundar's injury. The team management is expected to provide an update after receiving the scan results.

This is the second injury blow for India in just two days. Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the series due to a side strain and was replaced by Dhruv Jurel in the squad.

Sundar is also part of the T20 World Cup 2026. With the ICC event scheduled for February, the team's management will closely monitor his recovery.

While ‘Men in Blue’ has taken an early lead in the NZ series, all eyes will now be on the BCCI's official update on Sundar’s fitness and India’s next steps for the remaining matches.
