Gautam Gambhir, newly appointed as the new coach of the Indian cricket team, is set to meet with selectors this week ahead of the upcoming Sri Lanka series. 

Gambhir's appointment as head coach follows Rahul Dravid's resignation after leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup. Gambhir, who currently serves as a mentor for KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders), will be taking over from Dravid and has signed a contract until the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.

Gambhir set to meet selectors ahead of Sri Lanka series

After the T20 World Cup Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from T20 cricket, and discussions are ongoing regarding their participation in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Gambhir will be meeting with selectors this week to finalize these decisions.

In the event that Rohit Sharma is absent KL Rahul is considered as a potential candidate to be the ODI captain, while Hardik Pandya may lead the T20 squad. If Hardik Pandya opts out of playing, Suryakumar Yadav could potentially step in for the T20 format.

“It is expected that in the absence of Rohit, Hardik and KL are the options to be given the responsibility of captain. Both have captained the team earlier. If Hardik is not available for the T20Is, you might see Suryakumar Yadav as captain in T20Is and Rahul in ODIs. But for now, it seems that Hardik and KL will lead the team”-A close source said.

Gautam Gambhir played key roles in India's World Cup wins in 2007 and 2011, top-scoring in both finals. He also led KKR to IPL victories in 2012 and 2014. In 2024, KKR brought him back as mentor for their third IPL title. Now, the BCCI trusts Gambhir to lead India to more titles as coach.
