To celebrate their contributions to women's cricket in India, the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) is set to name two stands at the ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium after Mithali Raj and Ravi Kalpana. The development was confirmed by Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh. The stands will be unveiled during India’s next Women's World Cup 2025 match against Australia on October 12.

This event aims to honour the highly deserving Mithali Raj, one of the pioneers of women's cricket in India, for her unmatched achievements. Leading the national team from 2004 to 2022, Mithali remains the highest run-scorer in women's international cricket to date. Meanwhile, Ravi Kalpana, an Andhra-born wicket-keeper batter, will also receive a remarkable tribute.

Previously, only the iconic Eden Gardens had a stand named after a female cricketer. Former India legend Jhulan Goswami was honoured by the Cricket Association of Bengal. In January 2025, the CAB unveiled the stand recognising her legendary career and lasting impact on women's cricket.

Smriti Mandhana's heartfelt wish comes true

Notably, the idea originated after star Indian batter Smriti Mandhana's conversation with AP minister Nara Lokesh. During the ‘Breaking Boundaries’ event in August, Mandhana emphasised the importance of honouring legendary women cricketers for their role in nurturing the sport in India. She pointed out that while stadiums across the nation feature stands named after male cricketers, none are dedicated to women.

Mandhana's request prompted immediate action, as Mr Lokesh shared the idea with authorities, and the association acted swiftly.

“Smriti Mandhana’s thoughtful suggestion captured a wider public sentiment. Turning that idea into swift action reflects our collective commitment to gender parity and to recognising the pioneers of women’s cricket,” Lokesh said, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian women’s team is preparing for their biggest challenge yet in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2025. The Women in Blue will face their defending champions, Australia, on October 12 at the ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag.

This match now carries even more significance, with the tournament favourites clashing. India will hope to overcome their biggest hurdle and honour their veterans with a victory.
