Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, whose cricketing skills once left fans in awe, found himself at the centre of unwarranted social media frenzy following a video that portrayed him in a fragile state.

Vinod Kambli advised fans to not believe everything on social media

On Thursday, in a reassuring gathering with some of his closest allies, Vinod Kambli quashed concerns about his health, advising his well-wishers, “I am fine, don’t believe social media.”

The viral clip, which captured Kambli struggling to walk and needing assistance, stirred alarm among fans and friends alike.

However, the Couto brothers, including Kambli's schoolmate Ricky and first-class umpire Marcus, were quick to visit and verify his condition firsthand.

The trio spent the afternoon reminiscing about Kambli’s glory days on the field, from duelling with the formidable West Indies pacers in the 1990s to facing off against the legendary spinner Shane Warne.

“He was in jolly mood when we met him. He is recovering well and is in much better condition. The video being circulated is outdated,” said Marcus as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Further dispelling the rumours, Marcus noted:

“He doesn’t have belly fat and eats his food well. The entire family was there, enjoying each other's company.”

The scene at the Kambli residence was warm with his son Cristiano, also a budding left-hand batter, soaking up batting tips from his father.

It is worth mentioning Kambli’s health has been a topic of public concern for years, with the cricketer being candid about his battles with heart issues and depression.

Despite a series of health scares in the early 2010s, friends and family stated that his current state is much improved.

The former cricketer also connected with several old friends on Thursday, including Abey Kuruvilla, now BCCI GM, and Ajinkya Naik, President of the Mumbai Cricket Association, who both expressed their support and relief at seeing Kambli in good health and spirits.
