In Match 22 of The Hundred 2024 Women's competition, Smriti Mandhana's challenging season continued as she was run out early during Southern Brave’s pursuit of victory against Oval Invincibles at the Kennington Oval in London.

The game, curtailed to 65 balls per side due to rain, presented a crucial opportunity for Mandhana to turn her fortunes around. However, her time at the crease was brief and ended in disappointment.

Mandhana's form woes intensified with run-out by Athapaththu

Smriti Mandhana stepped out with intent but her innings was abruptly cut short at just 2 runs from as many balls.

The 16th ball of the innings proved unlucky for her, as Chamari Athapaththu’s sharp fielding caught her off guard, running her out and adding to her string of low scores.

This dismissal was not just a personal setback but also a jittery moment for the team, putting their chase of a modest target of 80 on shaky ground.

Mandhana's form has been a growing concern, with her inability to convert starts into significant scores becoming a recurring theme this season.

Each dismissal seems to reflect the pressure and expectation resting on her shoulders, as she’s been struggling to recapture the form that once made her one of the most feared openers in women's cricket.

Brave Women seal victory despite Mandhana's cheap dismissal

Meanwhile, despite Mandhana's dismissal throwing a spanner in the works, her opening partner Danni Wyatt rose to the occasion, steering Southern Brave to a much-needed victory, their first of the season.

Wyatt’s unbeaten 46 off 37 balls, filled with three fours and two sixes, was a masterclass in chasing under pressure. Her heroic six off the penultimate ball, which sealed the win, was the silver lining for the Brave, keeping their hopes alive for a spot in the Eliminator.

Earlier in the day, the Oval Invincibles Women had put up 79/4 in their innings, with Marizanne Kapp leading the charge with a brisk 26 off 17 balls.

As Southern Brave Women gear up for their next challenge against Trent Rockets Women on Saturday, August 10, in Southampton, all eyes will be on Mandhana to see if she can turn the tide and rediscover her form.
