Virat Kohli’s return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy turned many heads, and with that, there were a lot of expectations for him to deliver. The Indian stalwart did not disappoint as he scored a masterful century to help Delhi register a comprehensive win over Andhra Pradesh.
After the match, the former Indian captain posed for a picture with the entire Andhra team. This was a great opportunity for the youngsters of the team to play against a player like Virat, who has established himself as one of the best cricketers to have graced the sport.
While some players from the Andhra team, including Nitish Kumar Reddy and Srikar Bharat, have already played with or against Virat, this was the first time for most youngsters to be in his presence.
Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s record
As for the match, Virat was in fine form in his return to the tournament after over a decade and a half. He scored a patient 131-run knock in 101 balls, which included 14 fours and three sixes while chasing the target of 299 runs.
In the process, he also became the fastest player to score 16000 runs in men’s List-A cricket, achieving the milestone in his 330th innings. He went past Sachin Tendulkar in the list, who got to the landmark in 391 innings.
Just like Kohli, former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma also made his return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the game between Mumbai and Sikkim. He too scored a century, although at a much faster pace. He scored 155 runs in just 94 balls, which included 18 fours and nine sixes.
The return of these two star players to competitive domestic cricket has ended any doubts about their place in the Indian ODI team setup. The fact that they delivered such high-octane knocks has also fuelled their already strong chances of making it to the 2027 ODI World Cup squad.
