Former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad is set to become the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). He was the only valid nominee left for the top post. This follows the rejection of one rival's nomination and the withdrawal of another candidate.
Notably, Prasad had previously served as the association's vice-president under Anil Kumble in 2010-2013 and is up for the presidential bid this time. He leads the Team Game Changers panel. His panel, however, faced a setback as former treasurer Vinay Mruthyunjaya, failed to clear scrutiny for the secretary's post on technical grounds.
Venkatesh Prasad's arrival comes with a panel revamp
After Vinay's removal from candidature, the former treasurer said that he is unfazed by the rejection and will continue to support Team Game Changers.
"This decision has been a personal setback, but it has not shaken my commitment or my resolve. In fact, it has only strengthened my belief in the change we are all striving for. My full strength, energy, and unwavering support now stand firmly behind Team Game Changers, ably led by our legendary cricketer Venkatesh Prasad," Mruthyunjaya said in a statement.
The vice-president's race is now between Sujith Somasundar from Game Changers and D Vinod Sivappa from Team Brijesh. Somasundar recently left his role as the Head Of Education at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
Speaking of Venkatesh Prasad, the 56-year-old had a decorated career with the ball. Prasad played 161 ODI matches where he managed to bag 196 wickets while in Test cricket, he scalped 96 wickets from 56 innings. Prasad played many List A matches too as he bagged 295 wickets from 236 innings.
Nevertheless, the window for withdrawing nominations ends on November 26. The final candidate list will be announced after that. Notably, the KSCA elections are scheduled for December 7. A retired High Court judge will supervise the process.
