Vaishnavi Sharma snared a remarkable match-winning spell for India at the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Hobart Hurricanes marched into the BBL 2024-25 finals, and the PCB is reportedly hopeful of Saim Ayub attaining full recovery in time for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, January 21.

Jos Buttler Counters BCCI’s Take On Families On Cricket Tours

The BCCI introduced a few strict guidelines for the Indian cricket team following their humiliating defeats against New Zealand at home and against Australia ‘Down Under’. One of the rules has limited the duration of a player’s family to accompany them during cricket tours.

England captain Jos Buttler, who is currently in India for a series of white-ball fixtures against the hosts, recently remarked that the presence of families has no effect on player’s performance. Countering BCCI’s policy, Buttler stated that families should accompany cricketers on tours as some players tend to spend a long time away from home.

PCB Hopeful Of Saim Ayub’s CT 2025 Return

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is hopeful of Saim Ayub attaining full recovery in time for the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. As reported by Cricket Pakistan, Ayub will not be required to undergo any surgery despite earlier claims and rumours.

It is worth noting that the youngster twisted his ankle while trying to stop the ball during Pakistan’s series-deciding second Test match against South Africa earlier this month. The injury prompted Ayub to miss the rest of the match, as he was immediately taken for scans and was advised a break of six weeks. Pakistan’s Champions Trophy campaign is slated to commence from February 19 onwards with a match against New Zealand.

Hobart Hurricanes March Into BBL 2025 Finals

The Hobart Hurricanes team justified its table-topping run from the group stage by marching into the finals of the BBL 2024-25 season with an emphatic win over Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier. Batting first, the Hurricanes hauled 173-7 from 20 overs courtesy of a swift 42 from Ben McDermott, 15-ball 36 from Mitchell Owen and a 10-ball 25 from Tim David. For the Sixers, Ben Dwarshuis and Jafer Chohan picked up two wickets each in their respective four-over spells.

Chasing 174, the Sydney Sixers managed just 161-5 from 20 overs to fall 12 runs short of their target. Jordan Silk top-scored in the run chase with 57 off 44 balls in the middle order, but two wickets each from Riley Meredith and Cameron Gannon ensured the Hurricanes registered its eighth win this season.

ICC Tells India To Comply With Jersey Rule

An ICC official has reportedly clarified that all teams are obligated to comply with the rules of putting the names of host country on their jerseys for ICC tournaments. The report came to light after it appeared that Team India will not be putting the name of Pakistan on its jersey for the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

While Pakistan was originally designated as sole hosts of the tournament, BCCI’s reluctance in sending the Indian team across the border over geo-political tensions prompted the ICC and PCB to formulate a ‘hybrid model’, which would see Team India’s matches being played in the UAE.

Vaishnavi Sharma Takes Hat-Trick In India’s Big Win

Vaishnavi Sharma picked up five wickets at an expense of just five runs to headline India Women’s Under-19 team’s huge 10-wicket victory over their Malaysian counterparts in match number 16 of the 2025 ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup. The left-arm spinner mopped up the Malaysian tail for just 31 in 14.3 overs after Indian skipper won the toss and opted to field.

Through her spell, Sharma became the first Indian bowler in women’s Under-19 World Cup history to take a hat-trick.
