Brief Scores: England (1st innings): 246 all out (64.3 overs) [Ben Stokes: 70 (88), Jonny Bairstow: 37 (58); Ravichandran Ashwin 3/68 (21), Ravindra Jadeja 3/88 (18)] lead India (1st innings): 119-1 (23 overs) [Yashasvi Jaiswal: 76* (70), Rohit Sharma: 24 (27); Jack Leach 1/24 (9)] by 127 runs.

Team India took early command over England after a dominant opening day in the first Test of their five-match series at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

IND Vs ENG Day 1 Test Highlights

After English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett justified their captain’s call of batting first with a blazing 55-run start, Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were quick to quench England’s brewing ‘BazBall’ approach with a joint three-wicket burst.

England’s 55-0 soon became 60-3 before senior men Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow registered promising starts by sharing 61 runs together for the fourth wicket. While Bairstow was cleaned up by Axar Patel for 37, Root top-edged one to Jasprit Bumrah for 29 to give Jadeja his second wicket of the innings.

Bumrah, after going wicketless in his opening spell, deceived Rehan Ahmed with a slower one as England’s struggles further worsened at 155-7. Fortunately for the visitors, their captain, Ben Stokes, stood up by tonking a rebellious 70-run knock from just 88 balls. The cricketer formed crucial runs with the tail before a clean-up job from Bumrah enveloped the English innings at 246 from 64.3 overs.

Ashwin and Jadeja finished with identical three-fers, while Axar silently played the supporting role by picking up figures of 2-33.

Yashasvi Jaiswal extends Indian dominance by stumps

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal flogged England’s spin-heavy attack with an unbeaten 76 to take his side to 119-1 by stumps. The youngster shared 80 runs with opening partner and captain Rohit Sharma (24) before the latter gave away his wicket to Jack Leach.

Still, 127 runs away from England’s first innings total, Jaiswal will resume India’s batting charge with Shubman Gill (14*) on Day 3.
