The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the addition of Sarfaraz Khan to the Indian squad for the second Test against England in Vizag, following KL Rahul's injury-induced exit.

Fans rally behind Sarfaraz after exclusion from IND's playing XI vs ENG

Rahul, sidelined by a hamstring injury, paved the way for Sarfaraz, who was expected to make his Test debut based on his impressive performance against the England Lions in a 4-day unofficial Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The 26-year-old cricketer clinched the Player of the Match award with a stunning innings of 161 runs off 160 balls, including 18 fours and 5 sixes, leading India A to a victory by an innings and 16 runs.

With a remarkable first-class record featuring 3912 runs at an average of 69.85 and a strike-rate of 70.48 across 45 matches, Sarfaraz's inclusion seemed evident after his maiden call up to the senior team. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Sarfaraz was not named in the playing XI for the Vizag Test, a decision that led to widespread disappointment and debate among cricket fans and pundits.

Despite his formidable domestic record and the anticipation surrounding his debut, Rajat Patidar was chosen to replace Rahul in the lineup. This decision sparked a flurry of reactions on Twitter, with many calling it an injustice to overlook Sarfaraz after his consistent performances and recent achievements.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Sarfaraz Khan’s omission:

Meanwhile, the debate over Sarfaraz's exclusion overshadowed other changes in the team composition, including Mohammed Siraj being replaced by Mukesh Kumar for workload management and Kuldeep Yadav stepping in for the injured Ravindra Jadeja.

As the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, commenced their innings after winning the toss and opting to bat, the focus remained on the selection choices, particularly the absence of Sarfaraz Khan from the playing XI. At time of writing this article, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are in the middle and have provided a solid start for India with 32/0 after 13 overs.
