Tim Southee, New Zealand 's veteran fast bowler, has decided to step down as captain of the Test side. The move comes after Sri Lanka recently whitewashed the BlackCaps. Tom Latham has been named his successor and will lead the side in the upcoming Test series against India.

Latham has previously led New Zealand in nine Test matches and has now been appointed as a full-time captain. Southee, on the other hand, will continue to provide his services as a player and has ended his Test captaincy tenure with six wins, six losses, and two draws in 14 Tests.

Southee Owes To Support Tom Latham And Young Players

The 35-year-old, Tim Southee in his statement after stepping mentioned that his decision to step down is in the best interest of the team. He added that he would continue to put the team forward and contribute as a bowler and has assured Tom Latham of all his support as a senior cricketer in the upcoming tours.

“Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege. I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team. I believe the way I can best serve the team moving forward is focusing on my performances on the field and getting back to my best, to continue taking wickets and helping New Zealand win Test matches. I will, as I’ve always done, continue to support my teammates, especially the exciting young bowlers making their way on the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in the role and he knows I’ll be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years.”

New Zealand are currently on a tough subcontinent tour. They started with a one-off Test against Afghanistan, which was washed out, and then lost both Tests against Sri Lanka comprehensively, which probably prompted Southee to resign. They are now set to head to India for the three-match Test series, which will start on October 16th at the M. Chinnaswany Stadium in Bengaluru.
