Tilak Varma Signs For Hampshire; Set To Play In County Championship

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) confirmed on Wednesday that Tilak Varma, Mumbai Indians’ 22-year-old superstar, will play for Hampshire in the upcoming County Championship in England. The HCA has given the green light to Tilak, and hence, the approach which was made by the English county club will go forward.

"The Hyderabad Cricket Association is happy to inform that Hyderabad International player Mr. N Thakur Tilak Varma has been approached by the team Hampshire County to play in the UK County Championship League," HCA said in a release, as quoted by PTI. "The Hyderabad Cricket Association wishes him a great stint with Hampshire County."

Tilak Varma Joins Sudharsan; Gets A Dream County Deal

The signing of Tilak means he will join Sai Sudharsan, another rising superstar from India who won the Emerging Player Of The Year award in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). While Hampshire will have Tilak, Sudharsan plays for Surrey, and lately talked about his experience as well from there.

Hailing from Hyderabad, Tilak has made 1204 runs across 28 innings in First-Class cricket, averaging 50.16. This includes five hundreds and four half-centuries, with the highest score being 121.

Talking about the international arena, Tilak has played 4 ODIs and 25 T20Is for India. A good run in the County Championship will increase his chances to play for India in red-ball set-up in the future, with Virat Kohli’s retirement definitely making a place open for others in India’s middle-order position.

Meanwhile, Tilak did not have a great IPL campaign in 2025 after being retained by the five-time champions. He could only make 343 runs across 16 matches, with a strike rate reading 138.31.
