In a shocking development, experienced Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has announced his retirement from Test cricket. Hasaranga, 26, played just four Test for Sri Lanka between 2020-21, picking up four wickets and scoring 196 runs, including one fifty.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) player made his debut against South Africa in Centurion and last wore the whites against Bangladesh in Pallekele. Hasaranga explained that he wishes to prolong his white-ball career, and thus chose to give up on red-ball cricket.

In a statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket, CEO Ashley De Silva accepted Hasaranga's decision and remained confident about the all-rounder in limited-overs cricket.

Here's what De Silva said

"We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward."

Hasaranga has been a sensation in T20Is, claiming 91 wickets in 58 matches, while also showing his process in ODIs, picking up 67 wickets from 48 games. In 44 First-Class matches for Colombo Cricket Club, Hasaranga has picked 102 wickets and accumulated 2,657 runs.

Hasaranga is currently leading B-Love Kandy in the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 and is the third-highest wicket-getter (11) in the tournament.
