South African prodigy batting prodigy Dewald Brevis might well make his international debut in his country’s upcoming home series against Australia. The ‘Proteas’ are slated to host Australia in three T20Is and five ODI matches, with the first of those matches set to be played on August 30 in Durban.
Nearly two weeks prior to the launch of the series, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have announced a 16-player T20I squad and a 19-player ODI squad, with young Brevis finding a spot for himself in both of them.
Brevis makes it to SA squad before World Cup 2023
Dewald Brevis shot himself to global reckoning with a splendid run at the 2022 Under-19 World Cup in West Indies. The right-handed batter listed 506 runs throughout the competition, and was fittingly adjudged as ‘Player of the Tournament’.
Despite his heroics, Brevis had to toil away in global T20 franchise leagues for nearly a year-and-a-half before earning his maiden international call-up.
For starters, he will be expected to make his T20I and ODI debuts at some point during South Africa’s upcoming white-ball series against Australia. The matches themselves serve as one of the final rounds of dress rehearsals for both sides ahead of the ODI World Cup in India later this year.
Notably, South African veterans like Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada have been rested from the T20I segment of the series, while the likes of Donovan Ferreira, Gerald Coetzee and Matthew Breetzke have secured a spot for themselves in the shortest format’s line-up instead.

The series against Australia will kick-off with a T20I at Durban’s iconic Kingsmead Cricket Ground. Following the conclusion of T20Is, the two teams will shift to Bloemfontein’s Manguang Oval for five ODIs between September 7 and September 17.
CSA have issued a media report that the selectors will announce a 15-player South African squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup just days prior to the 50-overs series against Australia.
