After winning the T20 World Cup, Indian coach Rahul Dravid thanked captain Rohit Sharma for convincing him to stay on after the disappointing 2023 ODI World Cup final.

The 2023 ODI World Cup was a huge disappointment for every Indian cricket fan, as India lost the final to Australia despite dominating the tournament like no other team ever had.

India were the favourites and cruised through the group rounds and semi-finals but faltered in the final against Australia in the ODI World Cup.

Losing on home soil to Australia was a massive setback, especially since India had been trying to avenge the loss in the 2003 World Cup final. This defeat was even harder for Dravid, who was part of both teams—serving as India's deputy in 2003 and as the coach in 2023.

Rohit Sharma and Jay Shah convinced Rahul Dravid to continue

Rahul Dravid had decided to step down as coach, but according to Suryakumar Yadav, it was Jay Shah and Rohit Sharma who convinced Dravid to stay until the T20 World Cup.

"In the end, Dravid came & thanked Rohit & said 'Thank you, Rohit, for that phone call in November' because he didn’t want to continue after the 50 over World Cup loss but Rohit and Jay sir convinced him to stay"-Suryakumar Yadav said.

Rahul Dravid has stepped down as India's head coach. Along with him, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindr Jadeja have also retired from the T20I format.

Gautam Gambhir is expected to take over as the Indian coach, aiding in a smooth transition. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is anticipated to become India's next T20I captain.
