Fans have been eagerly waiting for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s return to the Indian team. There were rumours that the two senior players might feature in the upcoming India A one-day series against Australia A in Kanpur before India’s big ODI tour of Australia in October.

However, a new report suggests that this early return is not very likely. According to a senior BCCI official, it will be left to Kohli and Rohit to decide whether they want to play those India A matches. The board will not force them.

BCCI’s Stance On Kohli-Rohit Playing India A Before Big Australia Series

The BCCI has rules that say senior players must be available for domestic cricket if they’re fit, but in this case, since both Kohli and Rohit now play only ODIs, they may not be asked to play warm-up games.

"See it's highly unlikely that they will play the three India A games. No call has been taken on that and it will not be forced upon them," said a senior BCCI official, according to a report by Times of India.

"Only if they need some game time, you could see them play one, or even two, games before the Australia ODIs. But nothing has been finalised yet," said the BCCI official further.

What is certain is that both Kohli and Rohit are fully fit and available for India’s three-match ODI series in Australia next month. Before finalising squads, selectors will also be watching the Irani Cup and the Duleep Trophy final.

It is important to note that Kohli and Rohit have been away from international cricket for months. Their last appearance for India was in the ICC Champions Trophy final on March 9, 2025, when India beat New Zealand in Dubai.

Rohit scored 76 runs in that final and won the Player of the Match award. Kohli also had standout performances earlier in the tournament, scoring match-winning hundreds against Pakistan and Australia.

Originally, both players were expected to return during India’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh in August 2025, but that series was postponed to next year.

India A will play three ODIs against Australia A in Kanpur on September 30, October 3, and October 5, but whether Kohli and Rohit take part in those games is still doubtful.
