T20I Comeback Still Possible For Babar Azam: Here's How Ex-Pakistan Captain Could Be Recalled

The inevitable happened, and Pakistan's star batter, Babar Azam, was dropped from the Asia Cup 2025 squad. He hadn't featured in any T20I game for his nation since December 2024, and the selectors cited his strike-rate problem as the major reason for his dropping from the Pakistan team.

This would be for the first time since his international debut that Babar would miss any multi-national tournament for his nation. However, not all is lost for the right-handed batter. There are still chances for him to sneak into the T20I team in the near future, and here are 3 ways in which Babar could break through in the setup once again.

1) Perform heavily in domestic cricket

With Babar not being picked in the Asia Cup squad, his best chance of regaining form and getting back into the T20I side is by performing well in the domestic setup. With no Asia Cup for him, the star batter won't have any international commitment for the next couple of months, and this allows him to go back to his roots, play domestic matches, and once again knock on the selectors' doors.

2) BBL, a chance to get back in the T20I team

The Big Bash League in Australia (BBL) is one of the most popular franchise leagues in the world, and Pakistan's Babar was picked by the Sydney Sixers to feature in the BBL 2025 season.

The pitches in Australia are tricky for batters, and if Babar can excel in those conditions, he would automatically be a favourite to reclaim his T20I berth. Plus, Pakistan head coach, Mike Hesson, has also urged Babar to perform heavily in BBL.

"A player like Babar has an opportunity to play in the BBL and show he's improving in those areas in T20s (strike-rate). He's too good a player not to consider, as quoted by ICC.

3) Could be recalled as injury-replacement if...

With Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, and Sahibzada Farhan in the side, Pakistan's opening combination is sorted, however, if someone gets injured, Babar could be considered in the future to be included in the T2OI setup, but even that depends on several factors.

Even if one of the openers get injured, PCB selectors might pick someone else instead of Babar, but if the star batter performs heavily and plays with an aggressive intent in the BBL, the team might consider taking him back.
