The ICC is said to be considering a massive expansion for the 2028 edition of the T20 World Cup, possibly increasing the number of participating teams from 20 to 32. This thrilling proposal was under consideration at the ICC Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Singapore.
Before looking ahead to 2028, the forthcoming T20 World Cup is already planned for February-March 2026 and will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. 20 teams will participate in that tournament. But for 2028, ICC has grander plans.
T20 World Cup Likely To Expand In 2028
As per Forbes, a special six-member working group has been formed by the ICC to look into the possibility of expanding the T20 World Cup in 2028 to as many as 32 teams.
The group is headed by New Zealand’s Roger Twose and includes representatives from cricket powerhouses like India, Australia, and England. If approved, this change would make the 2028 T20 World Cup the biggest in terms of team participation.
The move comes after the success of smaller nations like Italy, which recently made history by qualifying for their first-ever T20 World Cup in 2026. The growth of cricket in non-traditional countries such as the USA and Italy has motivated the ICC to take a broader global strategy.
Adding 12 more teams by 2028 would be a huge step in spreading cricket globally. It would allow more Associate Nations, countries where cricket is still developing, to compete on the world stage. It also gives fans from across the globe more teams to cheer for and more thrilling matches to enjoy.
But logistically speaking, hosting a 32-team tournament might be too much for the ICC and the host countries. Hence, ICC must carefully evaluate the pros and cons before coming to a final decision.
