South Africa overcame a spirited USA fightback to win the opening Super Eight match of the 2024 T20 World Cup by 18 runs at Antigua’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Amidst South Africa’s batting carnage in the middle-overs, USA spinner Harmeet Singh staged a remarkable fightback for his side by picking up the key wickets of well-set Quinton de Kock (74 off 40 balls) and dangerman David Miller for a first-ball duck as Proteas slipped to 126-3 in 12.3 overs.

New-ball speedster Saurabh Netravalkar also struck in his return spell to account for Aiden Markram’s (46 off 32 balls) exit at 141-4 with five overs still left in the South African innings.

Number three batter Nitish Kumar and captain Aaron Jones also followed suite, crumbling in front of Rabada and Keshav Maharaj respectively as USA crashed to 56-3 within the first seven overs of the innings.

At 76-5, USA opener Andries Gous kept the chase alive by sharing a 91-run partnership with Harmeet Singh (22-ball 38) for the sixth wicket. Gous himself ended up smacking an unbeaten 80 from just 47 balls with five boundaries and five sixes.

However, a tight death-overs finish from Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje ensured South Africa walked away with an 18-run win.
