New Zealand demolished Uganda by nine wickets to record their first win of the ongoing T20 World Cup.

After mopping up Uganda’s entire line-up for just 40 runs, the New Zealanders soared past their target inside the opening powerplay to inject themselves with a massive NRR boost.

Here’s the timeline of how NZ vs UGA panned out in Trinidad:

NZ vs UGA Highlights: Trent Boult Produces Double-Strike In Opening Over

New Zealand paceman Trent Boult struck twice in the first over of the match itself to get rid of Uganda opener Simon Ssesazi and number three batter Robinson Obuya.

The speedster accounted for both top-order batters for first-ball ducks as Uganda slipped to 1-2 at the end of the first over.

NZ vs UGA Highlights: Southee, Santner, Ferguson Pile On Boult’s Early Momentum

Trent Boult’s new-ball partner Tim Southee also struck in his opening spell by trapping Uganda’s number four Alpesh Ramjani plumb in front for a timid six-ball duck.

Uganda eventually reached 9-3 at the end of the sixth over to record the worst powerplay start in T20 World Cup history.

Spinner Mitchell Santner and fast bowler Lockie Ferguson accounted for the wickets of opener Ronak Patel and number five Kenneth Waiswa, respectively, as Uganda lost half their side for just 15 runs on the board in 7.5 overs.

NZ vs UGA Highlights: Rachin Ravindra, Tim Southee Cut Through Uganda’s Lower-Half

Brought into the attack after the first 11 overs, spinner Rachin Ravindra also made an instant impact with the ball, bewildering Riazat Ali Shah and Dinesh Nakrani in his first couple of overs to finish with figures of 2-9.

Frugal with the old ball following his sublime opening blitz, senior speedster Tim Southee (3-4) plumbed Fred Achelam and Juma Miyagi in front to bag his third LBW of the evening. Mitchell Santner picked the final wicket by dismissing number 11 Cosmas Kyewuta as New Zealand bowlers wrapped up Uganda’s line-up for just 40 in 18.4 overs.

NZ vs UGA Highlights: Devon Conway Drives New Zealand In 5.2 Overs

While Finn Allen scored a sluggish 17-ball nine to start with before falling to Riazat Ali Shah, wicketkeeper-batter and fellow opener Devon Conway belted four boundaries to take New Zealand home in just 5.2 overs and with nine wickets in hand.

The outcome marked New Zealand’s first win of the 2024 T20 World Cup and helped them secure third spot on the Group C points table.

Regardless of the magnitude of the victory, the Kane Williamson-led group has already been knocked out of the competition.
