Cricket Scotland have finally announced the 15-member squad for the T20I World Cup 2022. They will be kick-starting the tournament on October 17 with a battle against West Indies in the Group B match. The team will be aiming for a better performance this year.

They were brilliant in the group rounds last year as they qualified for the Super 12 games. However, the team failed to win a single match in the Super 12 and they will be hoping to transform their fortunes this season. The 15-member selection has been made considering the performance of the players in the two-match home T20I series against New Zealand in July.

There are some surprise selections in the team as all-rounder Brandon McMullen has received his maiden call-up to the national side. The youngster has been picked following his sensational performance both with the bat and the ball in the Regional series and A games.

Richie Berrington to lead the side

Apart from McMullen, Brad Wheal and Josh Davey are the other two notable inclusions in the team. The two pacers did not play the home series against New Zealand but the selectors noticed their brilliant performance in the T20 Blast. Wheal represented Hampshire in the tournament and ended up with 22 wickets from 13 games.

Speaking of Davey, he plied his trade for Somerset to pick 15 scalps in 11 matches. Meanwhile, Chris McBridge, Ali Evans, Gavin Main, Oliver Hairs, and Adrian Neill are the few players who have been dropped from Scotland’s squad following the T20I games against New Zealand. Richie Berrington will be leading the 15-member side with Matt Cross as his deputy.

Shane Burger opens up on the selection

The head coach, Shane Burger, seemed happy with the selection of the squad. The veteran believes that they have been able to achieve a perfect blend of youth and experience for the T20I World Cup.

Burger said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo,

“We have selected 15 that we believe will make the desired impact we are looking for. For those players who are not going to the World Cup, we look forward to seeing them challenging for international honours in years to come. The squad has a blend of youth and experience alongside locally based players and County representatives. We believe we have a good mix of the above and have selected players that are in form and can perform under pressure."

Scotland’s 15-member squad: Richard Berrington (C), George Munsey, Michael Leask, Brad Wheal, Chris Sole, Chris Greaves, Safyaan Sharif, Josh Davey, Matthew Cross (wk), Calum MacLeod, Hamza Tahir, Mark Watt, Brandon McMullen, Michael Jones, Craig Wallace
