A record-breaking 47,566 spectators packed the stands on day one of the fifth India-Australia Test on Friday, marking it the highest-ever opening day attendance for a Test match between the two teams at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Australian public continued to turn out in large numbers for the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

"The records keep on falling. Over 45,000 through the gates of the Sydney Cricket Ground on Day 1," Cricket Australia tweeted.

This new mark comes just days after the all-time attendance record at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was smashed earlier in the series.

By lunchtime on day one, 45,465 spectators were already present at the SCG, surpassing the previous record of 44,901 set during the 2003/04 series.

Cricket Australia also noted that this was the largest crowd turnout at the SCG for a Test in nearly 50 years, dating back to 1976.

Australia Put India On Back Foot On Day 1

India had a rough start on Day 1 after opting to bat first. Both openers, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, failed to make an impact, scoring just 4 and 10 runs, respectively. The team's hopes briefly lifted when Shubman Gill looked solid, but he was dismissed by Nathan Lyon right before lunch.

Things didn’t improve after the break. Virat Kohli, who was expected to anchor the innings, was sent back by Scott Boland for just 17 runs. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja tried to steady the ship, but both fell quickly to Boland and Mitchell Starc. Nitish Reddy added to India’s woes by getting out for a duck.

Scott Boland was unstoppable, tearing through the Indian lineup. In a surprising twist, Jasprit Bumrah played a quick cameo, smashing a few boundaries to take India to a total of 185 runs.

Boland was the star with the ball, taking 4 wickets, while Mitchell Starc picked up 3 and Pat Cummins chipped in with 2.

When Australia came out to bat, they started confidently. But right before stumps, drama unfolded as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja for just 2 runs and gave a fiery stare to Sam Konstas. Australia ended the day at 9/1 after 3 overs.
