India lost their third wicket at the stroke of lunch on Day 1 of the fifth Test as Nathan Lyon dismissed Shubman Gill, who edged to Steve Smith at first slip. Smith was charged up by the wicket as he hurled abuses at the departing batter.

Team India had a shaky start to the fifth Test after Jasprit Bumrah, replacing Rohit Sharma as captain, opted to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul stepped out with intent. However, Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland’s fiery spells got the better of them as both openers were sent back with just 17 runs on the board.

Virat Kohli, meanwhile, survived a controversial catch by Steve Smith on the very first delivery he faced against Scott Boland. He made the most of the lifeline to stitch a 40-run partnership with Shubman Gill for the third wicket.

India looked comfortable before Pat Cummins deployed Nathan Lyon for the final over before lunch break. The game plan worked as Gill lost his patience.

He had blocked the previous delivery with confidence, but Gill suddenly decided to charge down the pitch on the final ball of the over, only to edge it straight to Steve Smith at slip. Lyon’s short-length delivery gripped and turned just enough to lure Gill into a poke with hard hands, resulting in an easy catch for Smith. 

Meanwhile, Steve Smith was charged up after the wicket as he hurled abuses at Shubman Gill. The fielder was frustrated after his catch to dismiss Virat Kohli was disallowed by the TV umpire, sparking a debate. Hence, his frustration led to an outburst on Gill, who walked back with a dejected face.

Meanwhile, the Australian team surrounded Nathan Lyon to celebrate the timely wicket as they broke the dangerous partnership just on the stroke of lunch. At lunch break on Day 1 of the Sydney Test, India had 57 runs on the board with the loss of three crucial wickets.
