In a major development, Australian batting stalwart Steve Smith has announced his retirement from ODIs following Australia’s exit from the Champions Trophy 2025. Smith, who led Australia in the tournament, confirmed that the semi-final clash against India was his last appearance in the 50-over format.  

However, it is important to note that the 35-year-old will continue to be available for Tests and T20Is. It would not be wrong to say that Smith is one of Australia’s finest batters in this format. He has undoubtedly played a crucial role in the team’s success over the years. His leadership and consistency made him a crucial figure in Australian cricket.

It is important to mention that Steve Smith is one of Australia’s most accomplished ODI players. The star player made his debut in 2010 as a leg-spinning all-rounder against West Indies on February 19 before evolving into a batting mainstay.

The 35-year-old has made 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96, cementing his place among Australia’s top run-getters in the format. His tally includes 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries, making him the 12th highest run-scorer for Australia in ODIs.  

One of the defining moments of his career came in 2016 when he registered his highest ODI score of 164 against New Zealand. Interestingly, he began his journey as a leg-spinning allrounder before transforming into a specialist batter. 

Over the years, he also contributed with the ball, picking up 28 wickets, and was a reliable fielder with 90 catches to his name.
