Steve Smith Announces Retirement; Australian Great Ends 15-Year Long ODI Stint

In a significant development, Australian maverick, Steve Smith has announced his retirement from the 50-over format. This decision comes after Australia's exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Smith, who was leading the Men in Yellow for the mega-event revealed that he indeed played his final ODI game against India in the Semi-final 1 of the tournament.

Smith Calls It Quits From ODIs


According to a Cricket Australia's  media release, Smith informed his team-mates after the semifinal loss that he will be retiring from ODIs immediately. However, on the bright side the Fab Four star would continue to be available for Test cricket and Twenty20 Internationals. In the official statement to Cricket Australia, Steve Smith said:

"It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey."

Steve Smith ODI Career 

The 35-year-old batter played 170 ODIs, amassing 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96, with 12 centuries and 35 fifties. He retired as Australia's 12th highest ODI run-scorer, with a top score of 164 against New Zealand in 2016. Debuting as a leg-spinning allrounder, he also claimed 28 wickets and took 90 catches for his side.

Steve Smith was part of Australia's ODI World Cup-winning squads in 2015 and 2023. After Michael Clarke's retirement, he became Australia's ODI captain, leading in 64 matches with 32 wins, 28 losses, and four no results. Smith recently also served as interim captain during the Champions Trophy, stepping in for the injured Pat Cummins. 

His leadership spanned crucial tournaments, contributing significantly to Australia's cricketing success.
