South African and Australian fast bowlers traded blows throughout an exhilarating opening day of the WTC 2025 final at Lord’s in London. Tilak Varma has penned a short County Championship 2025 deal with the Hampshire Cricket Club. In other news, Namibia will face Assam in a five-match One-Day series later this month.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, June 11.
Rabada, Smith, Webster Headline Day 1 Of WTC Final
Australia folded up for just 212 in the first innings of the WTC 2025 final in London. Kagiso Rabada picked up five wickets for South Africa at an expense of just 51 runs, while his younger pace mate Marco Jansen snared figures of 3-49. For Australia, Beau Webster counterattacked the Proteas with a swift 72, and senior pro Steve Smith carved out a fighting 66 off 112 balls.
In response, Mitchell Starc fought back for Australia with the wickets of both South African openers. Captain Pat Cummins and comeback man Josh Hazlewood also snagged a wicket each as the Proteas reached 43-4 from 22 overs by stumps on Day 1.
Nicholas Pooran Named MI New York Captain For MLC 2025
Nicholas Pooran has been appointed as the captain of the MI New York franchise for the MLC 2025 season. The explosive wicketkeeper-batter will be replacing Kieron Pollard, as confirmed by the franchise a couple of days prior to the launch of the third edition of the tournament in the USA.
Pooran’s ascension in MLC occurred just a day after the blistering middle-order batter announced his retirement from all international cricket for the West Indies team.
Tilak Varma Joins Hampshire For 2025 County
India’s rising star Tilak Varma has penned a short-term deal with the Hampshire Cricket Club for the 2025 County Championship matches in England. The deal will allow Varma to play four Division One matches for Hampshire in the months of June and July.
Notably, the 22-year-old has so far played just 18 first-class matches in his career since making his Ranji Trophy debut for Hyderabad back in December 2018 as a teenager.
Ganguly Slams BCCI For Shreyas Iyer’s England Series Snub
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has slammed the men’s selection committee for omitting Shreyas Iyer from India’s travelling Test squad in England. Since making his Test debut in November 2021 in Kanpur, Iyer has played just 14 Tests, aggregating 811 runs in the process at an average of 36.86.
Ganguly believes that Shreyas Iyer should have been part of India’s squad in England owing to his prolific touch with the bat in the last one year. The cricketer-turned-administrator also added that the charismatic right-hander has become capable of scoring runs under pressure and is already handling the short ball well.
Namibia To Host Riyan Parag’s Assam For Five One Day Games
The Namibian cricket team will be hosting Assam Cricket Association in a series of five 50-overs matches in June later this month. Each of the five matches, set to be played between June 21 and June 29, will be hosted by the FNB Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
The Assam team will be led by India’s rising star and Rajasthan Royals superstar Riyan Parag. Notably, Namibia national team has previously played competitive games against other Indian state teams like Punjab and Karnataka.
