Sri Lanka Sports Minister apologises to Australia following Gunathilaka rape case

After Sri Lankan batter Danushka Gunathilaka was suspended and arrested following rape charges, Sri Lanka Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe apologised to the Australian government, International Cricket Council (ICC) and the 'concerned parties' of Australia. He called the event an 'irresponsible individual act'.

"As the Minister in charge of the subject of sports, I wish to tender my apology, i'm deeply concerned and would take the responsibility on behalf of my country and its people to take necessary and remedial action accordingly."


The case is still ongoing and Gunathilaka has been suspended from all forms of cricket, he also will not be considered for any selections. The batter has pleaded innocent on all charges of the sexual assault. Sri Lanka Cricket has also declared that the board will cooperate to carry out the necessary inquires by the Australian police into the offence. Furthermore, steps will be taken to penalise the player, if found guilty.

To add to the wound, Sri Lanka also made an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2022
