In a significant development, Sri Lanka have announced a strong 16-member squad, including a travelling reserve, for the ICC World Cup 2023. As expected, wily leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the tournament, while his partner-in-crime Maheesh Theekshana has been picked despite nursing a hamstring injury. The squad, led by Dasun Shanaka, sees the return of Chamika Karunaratne, who will travel with the team as a standby player.

Experienced all-rounder Dasun Shanaka will lead the Lankan lions, with Kusal Mendis playing his deputy. The Lankan top-order looks rocksolid, studded with Mr consistent Pathum Nissanka alongside Dimuth Karunaratne and explosive opener Kusal Perera.

Their middle-order is studded with ace batters Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka, with Dhananjaya de Silva and skipper Shanaka set to play as all-rounders.

Promising cricketer Dunith Wellalage will spearhead the spin department alongside Maheesh Theekshana, while Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara, Dilshan Madushanka and Matheesha Pathirana will lead the pace attack.
