The hosts have showcased exemplary form ahead of the marquee event, recording an impressive series win over Australia at home. Promising opener Shubman Gill has played a pivotal role in India's recent ODI success, scripting numerous victories, including the all-important Asia Cup final. 

Meanwhile, legendary South African batter AB de Villiers has predicted Gill to emerge as the highest run-getter in the 2023 World Cup. 

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the ex-cricketer reckoned that Gill could score the most runs in the mega event, riding on his red-hot recent form and stoic batting technique.

"Shubman Gill will be the highest run scorer in the World Cup. He is in great form. I was always going with an opening batter- at the very worst, a no. 3 batter. I think Shubman is in such form that it would be silly of me to overlook him. He is a great player and has a fantastic technique. He is playing at home in India; yes, there will be pressure, but he is my pick," De Villiers said as quoted by TimesNow. 

Regarded as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Gill recently hammered a breathtaking ton in the second ODI against the Aussies in Indore. Rested for the third dead-rubber in Rajkot, the stylish Punjab batter will next be in action on October 8 when India will take on the same opposition in their World Cup opener in Chennai.
