Sri Lanka endured a disastrous World Cup campaign and crashed out of the World Cup without putting up a tough fight. The 1996 World Cup Champions sunk to a new low in their cricketing chapter after being blown away by Bangladesh in a controversy-marred match, which still remains a major talking point to this day.

The Lankan Lions finished at the ninth position in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup Rankings Table and only managed to secure two victories in the competition, thus making their 2025 Champions Trophy dream a distant reality. Their biggest defeat that they succumbed to came at the hands of the home side who brutally thrashed them on all fronts.

After being bowled out for 55 against India, tensions simmered as several prominent political figures voiced their frustration and also raised serious allegations aimed at the Lankan team. In recent developments, Wimal Weerawansa, a Sri Lankan MP, has accused Mahela Jayawardene of instructing captain Kusal Mendis to opt for bowling first against India on a Wankhede pitch that predominately favored batting.

Weerawansa added that the ICC is heavily influenced by the BCCI and claims that even the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was baffled by Mendis’s choice to bowl first on that wicket.

“That day after winning the toss against India, It’s Mahela Jayawardene who told the Sri Lankan captain to bowl first, Even the Indian Captain was shocked as to why he opted to bowl first, even though they were eager to bat first on that pitch, ICC is ruled by India, and Even Sri Lankan selection committee is appointed by India, there were no opening ceremonies in the tournament, but they held a ceremony in #INDVPAK match. There is something big going on in Cricket. We have to find out why Mahela advised Kusal Mendis to go for bowl first option.”

Soon after Sri Lanka’s horrid show against India, the Sri Lankan Cricket board underwent massive turmoil and was immediately sacked. They played their last World Cup league match against New Zealand on Thursday which also ended on a sorrow note.
