On Tuesday, former India captain and ex-Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly was appointed West Bengal's new brand ambassador by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Addressing the crowd present on Day 2 of the Bengal Global Business Summit, Banerjee while standing on the dais with Ganguly announced the latter's new role with an offer-letter, which the former cricketer did not refuse.

Here's what CM said on Ganguly

“He is a very popular figure who can work for the younger generations in a very good manner. I am very happy to announce that he will be our brand ambassador…. Please don’t say no.”

Earlier, Ganguly worked as a brand ambassador for Tripura, which is run by the national ruling party, the BJP. Ganguly takes over the role of WB's ambassador from Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, who was appointed back in 2012, and whose future with the state now remains unclear.

As quoted by TelegraphIndia, a close aide of CM claimed that Banerjee stated that Ganguly has been helping the party at ground level and that the cricketer traveled with the Bengal contingent to Spain two months ago.

“Sourav (Ganguly) has been helping us a lot. He is a local boy with the best intentions. He went to Spain too, and has been helping us in our efforts to attract investments.”

The aide further explained why Khan is being removed, who has been 'very busy' lately, and that CM wanted a more available and local person for the role.
