Soumya Sarkar (Twitter)
Soumya Sarkar bagged the most unwanted record of his career for Bangladesh on Saturday (December 23) as the elegant opener became the third opener for his country to be retired hurt in the history of One-Day Internationals.
The opener was forced to leave the crease at the start of Bangladesh's run-chase in the third and final ODI of the series in New Zealand in Napier after feeling discomfort in his eye and vision facing the ball.
Having struck a sensational century in the second game of the series at the Saxton Oval in Nelson on Wednesday (December 20), the cricketer could muster just four runs in the middle before he asked the physio to come out and give him an eyedrop.
When even that didn't work its magic, Sarkar decided it would be best for him to walk off the ground and get proper treatment without risking an injury which could've occurred had he continued with blurred vision against the Kiwi pace battery.
List Of Retired Hurt Bangladesh Openers
Unfortunately for Sarkar, the rightful decision to retire hurt etched him in an unwanted record list. There have been three previous occasions of a Bangladesh opener retiring hurt in the middle in the One-Day Internationals alone.
Litton Das
Among the most talented subcontinent batters in the contemporary game, Das was in his true element when he dominated the Zimbabweans towards a terrific century. The elegant right-hander was batting on 126 not out when he was forced to retire hurt from a 2020-dated ODI played in Sylhet due to dehydration.
Litton Das
Would you believe it? Even the next Bangladesh opener to leave the field retired hurt was Das as he pulled a hamstring muscle after compiling a majestic 81 not out in Harare against the same opposition back in 2022 during the first ODI of the three-match series.
Mehidy Hasan
On this occasion, it was Bangladesh's premier off-spinner promoted to open the innings, Mehidy Hasan, who entered the unfortunate list when he was forced to leave the field retired hurt during the Asia Cup 2023 game versus Afghanistan in Lahore. Having batted supremely well for his 112 not out, Mehidy left the ground after hurting his hand while playing a stroke in the 43rd over of the innings.
