In a significant development, Indian batting sensation Smriti Mandhana has been awarded the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024. It is important to mention that this is the second time she has won this prestigious accolade.

Mandhana’s exceptional performances helped her equal New Zealand legend Suzie Bates' record of winning the award multiple times. She first clinched the title in 2018. Bates, on the other hand, won the award in 2013 and 2016.

Smriti Mandhana's Significant Record

The 28-year-old left-hander had a stellar year with the bat, she made 747 runs in 13 matches at an impressive average of 57.46 including four centuries and three fifties. In addition to her batting exploits, Smriti Mandhana contributed with the ball, picking up one wicket in three matches.

The left-handed opener became the first batter to hit four hundreds in a calendar year in women's ODIs. She achieved the feat with a stylish hundred in Perth in December 2024.

Mandhana began the year 2024 modestly against Australia Women in January but found her rhythm by June during the home series against South Africa. She lit up the ODI series with back-to-back centuries in the first two matches in Bengaluru. December saw Mandhana conclude the year with an exceptional 105-run knock against Australia at the iconic WACA in Perth.

Her brilliance continued into October when she salvaged a shaky series against New Zealand with a stunning century in Ahmedabad.

She edged out fierce competitors, including Laura Wolvaardt,Chamari Athapaththu, and Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland. It is important to note that Wolvaardt had a strong 2024; she scored 697 runs in 12 ODIs, while Athapaththu impressed with 458 runs in nine matches for Sri Lanka.

Last week, Mandhana and Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma earned spots in the ICC Women’s ODI and T20I Teams of the Year 2024.
