Former New Zealand cricketer, Simon Doull recently appreciated Shubman Gill for his 90 (146) innings against New Zealand in third Test amid a challenging situation. Doull recalled how he predicted Gill to have a far better and successful career compared to Prithvi Shaw as he spotted the latter’s technical flaws back in 2018 when the duo bursted into the scene.
Shubman Gill’s rebound in the Mumbai Test against New Zealand was inspiring given his recent struggles at no.3. He failed in four innings already in the series and was under tremendous pressure to regain form ahead of the Australia tour.
Interestingly, Gautam Gambhir and Co helped Gill to embrace technical changes in the middle or a series. The youngster was able to adapt instantly and reaped rewards of his hard work in Mumbai. With India struggling on 86/4, Shubman Gill scored 90 off 146 balls to guide his team into a 28-run lead.
Simon Doull rates Shubman Gill highly after third Test heroics
Meanwhile, commentator Simon Doull was left highly impressed with Gill’s composure and temperament. He revealed on JioCinema that back in 2018, when Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw had bursted into the scene with the U19 World Cup, Doull saw a flair in Gill and made a bold prediction.
"When you think about a young man with the ability to change things in the middle of a series, that's what's quite impressive. And I first saw Shubman in the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand and and there was so much chat around Prithvi Shaw at that stage."
Simon added that while Shaw was overhyped, he knew in his heart that Gill will go on to have a far more successful career due to lack of technical flaws compared to Shaw.
"I made quite a bold statement that Shubman Gill's career would way, way surpass what Prithvi Shaw does because there was some technical flaws in Prithvi Shaw and and Shubman just didn't look like he had technical flaws at that stage," he said on JioCinema.
Simon Doull also revealed that Shubman Gill has always had a hunger to score big runs, especially in the red ball format.
"I think he just wants to score runs. When I interviewed him he was like I want big runs. I want big hundreds and that's the hunger of the man. And I think he wants them at Test level as well. Yes, the white-ball stuff means a lot to him, but he wants runs here. He wants big runs at this level. And you know that can only bode well."
India regains control of third Test
In a desperate bid to avoid a whitewash, India were bowled out for 263 runs in the second inning on Day 2 with a 28-run marginal lead. However, the little lead put pressure on New Zealand as they lost 3 wickets with just 44 runs on the board.
Akash Deep once again dismissed Tom Latham to draw first blood before Devon Conway was undone by extra bounce to gift Sundar a wicket. Ravi Ashwin finally snapped out of his wicketless streak to get dangerman Rachin Ravindra. Rachin ambitiously stepped out for a slog sweep but was beaten and stumped by Rishabh Pant.
